What do you mean the winning design couldn’t be built?
That was the situation after Jørn Utzon won the 1957 Sydney Opera House competition. His entry — sweeping curved roof shapes rising from the harbour like sails mid-flight — was unlike anything the judges had seen. It was also, from an engineering standpoint, impossible. Nobody knew how to construct those forms. Not Utzon. Not his engineers. Not anyone.
He built it anyway. It took sixteen years.
